Availability Details

The call can be made in your own home and only takes a maximum of half an hour per week. There is great flexibility around when you make the call and you can agree a time between yourself and the client. This would be for a maximum of around 30 minutes per week from the comfort of your own home.

Volunteer callers must be over the age of eighteen.

Age Concern Tyneside South need volunteers to make a weekly wellbeing call to an isolated and lonely older person.

This role involves making one call a week for around half an hour, from the comfort of your own home. We simply need you to have a chat with the person, make sure that they are ok and hopefully have a bit of a giggle too. All that we ask is that you then feed back on how the calls have gone once a month. This is not a counselling or support role and if any issues arise in the conversation, you  can contact us straight away to take up any concerns.

Skills needed

This volunteering role requires someone who is comfortable speaking on the telephone, has good communication skills, understands the need for confidentiality, has a good sense of humour, has good listening skills and understands and empathises with the needs of older people. They must be reliable, patient, sensitive and trustworthy.

Benefits for the Volunteer

Volunteers have the opportunity to make a real difference to an older person who is isolated and has very little contact with the outside world. Over time, many volunteers also make firm friends with the person they call.
