Availability Details

Our Sea Cadet Instructors dedicate on average roughly 2-3 hours per week to the role but you can give as much time to this role as you are able.

Attendance would be required at weekly parade nights (Mondays and/or Thursdays) or the ability to commit to one night per week or month.

We sometimes have additional cadet training days at the weekends if this is something you are able to join from time to time.

Details

Volunteers must be 18+ years old.

DBS:
DBS check is mandatory.
Interested volunteers would be invited to the unit for an informal interview and visit in the first instance.
At this visit they would be able discuss their interests, skills and the position that would best suit them.
From there, they would then complete a volunteer application form where they will be asked to provide details for 2 references.
They will then undergo an enhanced disclosure check and ID check.

Training:
All new volunteers are required to complete mandatory e-learning modules. This is to ensure that you gain a good level of understanding of Sea Cadets practices.
These courses include:
• Adult Induction
• Sea Cadets – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
• Safeguarding at Sea Cadets – Introduction & Virtual/Live Courses
• Sea Cadets – Responsible for Information
• Sea Cadets – Health and Safety
Thereafter, should volunteers wish to undertake further training in specific areas, they can discuss this with their Officer in Charge and be booked onto relevant training

Expenses:
Subsistence and travel are not covered at weekly parade nights. However, if volunteer instructors attend courses or weekend events, then their travel, and sometimes food expenses, will be reimbursed. Volunteers claim for these through our online App FinanSys.

Gateshead Sea Cadets is currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join their team as Sea Cadet Instructors, working with young people aged 9-18.  

Gateshead is a long-established Sea Cadet Unit that has provided life-changing opportunities for many young people. We currently have about 34 cadets who come from all over Gateshead and the surrounding areas.

Whether you opt to be a uniformed leader, or wear your own clothes, you can be hands-on, teaching junior or senior cadets. You'll run lessons, activities, games, projects and events that help cadets progress through the Cadet Experience, gaining qualifications and confidence as they go.

About the Volunteer Instructor role:

The tasks of an Instructor include but are not restricted to the following:

• Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of Children and Young People for whom they are responsible.

• Delivering instruction and training to cadets of the Sea Cadets. 

• Attending Parade Nights (Mondays & Thursdays) or being able to commit to a particular night each week or month.

Skills needed

Whatever your experience and skills, they could be utilised to help young people flourish – catering, archery, meteorology, navigation, orienteering, first aid, engineering, photography, marketing, football coaching, IT, social media, finance, driving - there is no limit. Whatever your interest, you could bring it to Gateshead Sea Cadets.

You could also share your skills out on the water with the next generation, through the opportunity to teach water sports such as kayaking, sailing, powerboating, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing.

We are particularly in need of Volunteer Instructors who have boating qualifications; if you have RYA paddle or similar qualifications, we would love to hear from you! If you don't yet have these qualifications, you could gain these with Sea Cadets.

However, there are no specific educational or experience requirements for this role; having the right attitude and a passion for improving the lives of young people are the most important things! If you think the person specification below sounds like you, then please get in touch:
