The Whickham & District Regional Fundraising Group is a new group acting as the local ambassadors for Alzheimer's Research UK, helping to raise funds and awareness in the town of Whickham and the villages of Sunniside, Swalwell and Burnopfield. The group is looking for more volunteers with a range of skills and supporters can get involved in a variety of ways including: helping to organise local collections Placing collecting cans in local shops Organsing fundraising events Putting up posters in local businesses Encouraging clubs, businesses, schools and other individuals to support the charity too! No matter how you feel you can help, the Whickham & District Regional Fundraising Group is a great way to support Alzheimer's Research UK whilst having lots of fun and making new friends. Every three minutes someone in the UK develops a form of dementia and there are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia today – including 14,174 people in Tyne & Wear – and with an aging population this figure is set to rise. As well as causing anguish for families, carers and loved ones, dementia costs the UK economy 23 billion a year, which is more than the cost of heart disease and stroke combined.  Yet despite this, compared to other serious diseases, dementia research remains drastically underfunded. In the North East, we have funded over £3.2 million of pioneering research including 31 groundbreaking grants at the University of Newcastle. The money raised by the Whickham & District Regional Fundraising Group will allow us to continue our vital research, bringing us closer to finding new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent dementia.
