Iyengar yoga focuses initially on the physical postures, or asanas, building up to work on meditative practice and work on the breath. Correct alignment and position are encouraged with poses held for a while to enable building of strength or for muscles to lengthen. Props such as belts and blocks are used to enable students, even beginners or those with past injuries, to access the poses.
