Newcastle Castle is a heritage site in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Castle that gave its name to the city. Consisting of two main buildings, the Castle Keep and the Black Gate, it has a thriving educational offer which sees over 5000 pupils visit the Castle annually. Volunteers help us to deliver many of the tours, workshops and other activities that these visitors enjoy. Duties of this role include:

  • Setup resources and spaces for educational visits to the Castle
  • Assist with the delivery of guided tours and educational workshops for a variety of groups including school groups, universities, community groups and more.
  • When more experienced, lead guided tours and workshops with the assistance of other volunteers.
  • When more experienced, assist staff with the delivery of Outreach activities and workshops offsite.
  • Maintain good standards of health and safety and safeguarding during school visits.

Skills needed

• Outgoing and willing to speak in public
• Enthusiastic about sharing the history of Newcastle
• Good information retention
• Willingness to learn
• Adaptable
• Physically able to manage the stairs in the Castle Keep
• Willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check
• Experience of teaching is an advantage but not necessary as full training is given.
