Parkinson's Power Buddy volunteers

Description of what will be involved: 

Do you love being active, or just want a good natter? Being a Parkinson’s power buddy, you will support people living with Parkinson’s to take their first steps to becoming more physically active.  This might be a walk in the park or along the coast, a touch of gardening or being a friendly face at the gym.

You will support your buddy by:

• Getting them from their home or place of work to and from the activity venue or location
• You’ll accompany, or even join them, in any activity to provide moral support and encouragement – but you won’t lead it.
• Motivating and encouraging them to achieve their personal aims through a mentoring approach
• Finding practical solutions to keeping active that fit around your buddy’s life
You will:
• Meet new and inspiring people from your local community
• Be a part of an innovative volunteer programme for Parkinson’s UK that will help us engage and support people living with Parkinson’s
• Develop new and existing skills, whilst getting out and about
• Make a valuable contribution to Parkinson’s UK, supporting our vital work
• Learn more about the work of Parkinson’s UK and Parkinson’s Power Project.

Skills and qualifications needed: 

• A proactive can-do attitude to help people make changes to their lifestyles
• Confidence and great communication skills, as you will be volunteering one on one to motivate and engage individuals
• Over 18 and ideally be able to drive and have access to a vehicle as you may need to transport your buddy to various places or venues
• An interest in physical activity; to share your knowledge and inspire your buddy about the benefits of physical activity
• Patience, and be friendly, approachable, diplomatic and a good listener, as you will need to be build an effective buddying relationship
• Enthusiasm, and be committed and able to motivate your buddy to take part in regular activity
• Basic IT and email skills, as you will be using the recording information and contacting people via email.
