Digital Heritage volunteer; Friends of Gateshead Archive

Description of what will be involved: 

This volunteer role will involved processing Gateshead Library's local studies collection; and providing advice and guidance on local and family history. 

The main roles include:

  • technology - this will involve cataloguing (data input, databases) MS Office Word and Excel, photography, scanning, image processing (e.g. photoshop), recording and editing oral history
  • interpretive - interest, knowledge and/or experience in areas relation to Gateshead History and heritage, interviewing, advice and guidance (local and family history), research and identification of materials, good writing skills for transcription and description

Much of the work is repetitive and demands a high level of accuracy, and ability to follow guidelines exactly

The group have recently put out a call for some additional volunteer tasks including:

  • summarising recordings made by Gateshead Oral History Group
  • researching and interviewing for Gateshead Oral History Group project "The Street Where I Lived"
  • transcription of handwritten documents, including Gateshead Voters lists, letters and scarpbook cuttings
  • digital caputre of voters lists, catalogue cards and other items using new scanning equipment
  • processing Steve Wood colour slides in Gateshead using photoshop
