Our Gateshead

Befriending volunteers

Description of what will be involved:

Volunteering is a great way for us to support our residents to stay connected with their local communities and have the special one to one time and stimulation that volunteers can offer.  Not all of our residents have family or friends who can visit them regularly so volunteers can offer a valuable link to the wider world, by giving their attendtion to individual residents, or by sharing their skills and experiences with a small group.

We welcome volunteers who want to help, including supporting our residents with leisure and social activities, befriending, gardening and maintenance, driving, helping with events, clerical and administration support in the kitchen.

Located in High Spen, a small village in suburban Gatesheadm Dovecote is just a stone's throw from a range of shops, restuarants and other amenities.  The home also has very good transprt links to the Metro centre and surrounding towns and cities, including Newcastle.

Our dedicated team provides a range of care and support for our residents, including dementia, residential, nursing and respite care.

There are nn specific skills or qualifications required.  We welcome anyone who is kind, caring, interested in other cultures and reliable.  All of our volunteers will:

- receive an induction before they start

- have reasonable travel expenses reimbursed

- be supported by our staff and receive on-going training

Induction is an essential part of introducing our new volunteers and familiarising them with our business. Getting the induction process right for our volunteers will help us get them up to speed as quickly as possible.  As a not for profit employer, our volunteers are an invaluable asset.

Our induction covers the following subjects:

- introduction to Sanctuary Care

- Care homes (vulnerable adults, types of care homes, job roles and volunteers)

- health and safety tour of the home

- Dementia Friends session - delivered online or by a Dementia Friends Champion
