The Soundroom has been part of the Gateshead community landscape for nearly 40 years, based in the old Redheugh Library on Cuthbert Street near the Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead. Originally founded in the 80's following on from Gateshead Music Collective and part of the Deckham Music Collective. The project moved to new premises in the old Redheugh library in the year 2000,  part of a Gateshead Council millenium project.

The charity currently runs 14 different weekly music and arts events welcoming over 2000 people every month through its doors. The Soundroom is home to the popular Gateshead Original Music Cafe for adults with learning disabilities, Gateshead Youth Music Night, Loud and Proud Drumming Group, Gateshead Guitar Socials group, Mix Motions DJ Group, Music 4 Mental Health Sessions, and Tuesday afterschool  Music & Street Dance Club. School holiday stage and music schools and youth rock nights and our Friday community recording days.

Other events include Music and Memories Tea Dance cafe and Warm Welcome accessible film club and the brand new monthly Word Bank Gig Night. 

Working with Young People The Soundroom works with aspiring young bands and musicians by providing low-cost weekly rehearsal space and delivering Gateshead Youth Music Night and its Tuesday afterschool  Music & Street Dance Club, supporting young people's development and providing opportunities to play and perform.

Events The project regularly organises and supports many community events. These include fundraising and gig nights which might involve bands who use the project, young people's groups, aspiring singers, songwriters, and spoken word events. The Soundroom works in partnership with different community groups to help increase participation in the arts for everyone in our diverse community.

Recordings and Rehearsals The Soundroom rehearsal and recording facilities are accessed extensively by the Gateshead community and are kept at affordable prices (from £8 per hour daytime)  remember every rehearsal room and recording session booked at The Soundroom directly helps the charity continue delivering our programme of 14 different weekly music and arts activities.

PA Hire - please enquire about our affordable PA hire, please note collection is usually only available on Thursday evenings and Fridays. (We do not hire mic stands )

Instrument Library- we have so many instruments at The Soundroom, gifted from our generous musical community, please ask us if you would like to borrow one during your rehearsal booking, or maybe even longer term. 

Rehearsal Facilities These include a drum kit in every room, and a specialised drumming room, a bass amp, at least two guitar amps, and PA with mics, all in from £8 per hour (daytime rate) £12 evening rates

The Soundroom Recording Studio The Soundroom Studio cost starts at £20 per hour (daytime community rate), including the engineer. For the technically minded our studio t is equipped with the following: 2 x Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 mic pre amps / audio interface Mac Pro - 2 x quad core processing Logic Pro 8 Mics: Rode NT1, AKG C1000's, Shure SM 58's, SM57's Monitoring: Genelec 1029A Full use of drums and back line: Mapex Meridian Birch kit, Marshall MBB 4410 bassamp, Line 6 Marshall guitar amps, Instruments available: Yamaha P-70 weighted action piano (can be used as MIDI controller for software instruments), Squier Strat, Encore bass. Big Live room, separate drum booth and vocal booth if require.
