MP Kevan Jones visits Naturally Social

New Kyo Kevan Jones

Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham, and his labrador Biff recently joined the Naturally Social volunteers at New Kyo near Stanley.

Naturally Social is a new project delivered by the Durham Wildlife Trust in the Stanley, Consett, and Derwentside area. The project aims to reconnect individuals with the environment, to gain the physical and mental wellbeing benefits that can be associated with making connections with the natural world. There are a variety of activities on offer from the project including; habitat management, bird identification, and wildflower meadow creation. These are open to anyone that wishes to get involved, no experience necessary!

The current group of volunteers are working to manage some wildlife sites around New Kyo, areas which are a haven for wildlife in the summer, and the whole local community will benefit from the volunteers’ efforts. For the volunteers getting close to nature has been great for their social lives and health.

Kevan Jones said:

“I was delighted to meet the volunteers, who were so enthusiastic about Durham Wildlife Trust’s project.  They told me that being outdoors and working with other people on the project brings great benefits to their health and well-being.  I was particularly impressed by the age range of the volunteers, they are living proof that you are never too old to be active!”

Kevan has had to face his own difficulties with mental health in the past and has found great solace in the natural world. It has helped him improve his own mindfulness while keeping him active and fit. Kevan and his dog Biff have a few favourite spots for exploring nature, particularly the woods around Beamish museum!

If you think that the Naturally Social project could be of benefit to you or someone you know, please email Mandy on: abell@durhamwt.co.uk for more details.
