Active 10 Brisk Walking APP
Last year, Public Health England launched the One You ‘Active 10’ campaign to encourage adults to build more physical activity into their life, starting with a daily brisk ten-minute walk.
The sedentary nature of modern, busy lives makes it difficult for many to find the time for enough physical activity and research found that four out of 10 (40%) adults in England walk less than ten minutes continuously each month at a brisk pace.
There are a number of short- and long-term health benefits to taking at least one brisk continuous 10 minute walk a day:
- lower your risk of type 2 diabetes (by 40%)
- cardiovascular disease (by 35%)
- dementia (by 30%)
- and some cancers (by 20%)
- It can also reduce the risk of early death by 15%.
The Active 10 app was created to help adults get more physical activity into their lives and is the only free app of its kind which combines intensity and time, rather than just distance or steps.
The app helps people gradually introduce more activity into their daily routine, with goal setting advice and motivational tips. It is also designed to help those who do walk relatively regularly, but not at a high enough intensity for it to count towards significant health benefits.
