Gateshead Borough Bowling Club  Hi, So ends another outdoor bowling season. the weather has been very kind, with only one game rained off the entire summer, so the time has arrived to tell you all of the ups & downs of our 'summer of bowling' We finished 2nd in the monday night 'Tens' league. We nearly made it all the way, but it just wasn't to be. The wednesday night 'Cowan' league however, was an entirely different matter. We eventually won it but not until the penultimate game, for, after being chased all the way by a resolute Rowlands Gill team, we clinched the league with a home win over Glen Park, which qualified us to appear in the shield final. The Cowan shield is played for between the winners of the 'A' & 'B' leagues. We had won our league, & Barley Mow had won theirs, & we met on the neutral venue of the Glen Park green. In an extremely close game, played in a friendly, competitive manner, we ran out winners by a very narrow margin to lift the trophy for the first time ever in our history. In our leagues there are two cup competitions that we enter, the Sinclair & the Charity. Unfortunately, we did not progress far in the former. The Charity cup however, was an altogether different matter. After several difficult matches we reached the final where we came up against a hard to beat Ryton side. In an enthralling match, we won by the slenderest of margins, a single point, once again for the fist time in our history. Such was the camerarderie on display that it was a shame one team had to lose, so we can only say 'tough luck' & commiserations to Ryton. Two of our bowlers won an open pairs competition @ Kibblesworth, & our triples entrants were unlucky to lose in the final of the Swinburne. We also had a pair reach the semi final of the Vets pairs @ Chester-Le-st. So, all things considered, that was an excellent season we have enjoyed. There are of course, several other teams competing in the park. Saltwell ladies have increased their membership, while the Avenue enjoys a tremendous team spirit. Saltwell too have had a successful year, winning the Sinclair cup, the league stages of the Marshall & the prestigious Swinburne cup. The saturday team, whose membership is selected from all of the teams in the park, won their league for the fourth consecutive year, while the friday night team battled on in their league. So, that's it all done & dusted for another year. It only remains for me to remind you all that we would love to see some new faces down at the park next season. There are plenty of teams to choose from if you fancy giving it a go; both the male & female based clubs need fresh blood. You will be extended a warm welcome, a friendly smile & a cup of tea. Go on, give it a try, i bet you'll be surprised.
