Derwent Valley established the first solely electric Rural Community Car Club in 2014 in Blackhall Mill, Gateshead. Since 2014 they have expanded their reach in the Derwent Valley to Shotley Bridge, Rowlands Gill and Blackhill with driver and non-driver members, individual and multi-person memberships with a small, dedicated team of volunteer drivers helping their non-drivers make hospital, surgery, and social engagements.

In total DVCC have 5 fully electric cars based at Blackhall Mill Community Centre, Rowlands Gill Library, Front Street Shotley Bridge, Derwent Street Car Park Blackhill with a fifth location to be announced at the end of 2023.

The community car club is available to people from across the Derwent Valley Area and the DVCC Volunteer Driver Scheme (VDS) which supports people who cannot drive themselves, with a volunteer driver, has affectionately been compared to a companionship car club due to the nature of the helpful scheme and friendly scheme.
