Volunteering in the Community

A group of our volunteers with a learning disability went to Winlaton Day Centre to provide activities for elderly people with the support of their Buddies.

Five volunteers prepared a quiz, a sing-a-long, ran the bingo session and made teas and coffees throughout the afternoon.

By the end of the day all of the volunteers and the elderly people at the centre were dancing along to some old classics.

Through the Gateshead Supported Volunteers Programme at GVOC the volunteers were given the opportunity to plan a day to volunteer in their community.

The Day Centre was chosen, and the buddies, trained by GVOC, supported the volunteers with their tasks for the day.

We have also raised £92 in our fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Volunteers and their Buddies planned a one-day volunteering activity, which they named The Big Smiley Day.

They baked cakes, bought sweets for ‘Guess how many sweets in the jar’ and arranged the raffle.
