Christmas can be a difficult period for some people and for young people leaving care it can be quite a lonely experience.

GVOC staff and volunteers teamed up with the leaving care team in Gateshead to develop a project which would benefit young people and give them something nice over Christmas.

The project which took place on the 22nd December 2010 was themed around the ‘Shoe Box Appeal’ and all donations were delivered to young people that are currently leaving care and trying to set up their own homes and live independently.

When a young person leaves care they do not have the everyday essentials that we take for granted, some of which are seen as a luxury.

The boxes were filled with a wide array of toiletries such as shampoos, soaps, shower gels, perfumes, deodorants and toothpaste alongside items of clothing such as socks, scarf’s and gloves.

A big thank you to everyone who donated items and to the staff and volunteers at GVOC for their help to make over 40 gift boxes for young care leavers in Gateshead.
